Paul Coffey was selected by the Edmonton Oilers with the sixth overall pick in the 1980 NHL Draft. Coffey had a slow start in his rookie season but continued to improve his play as he established himself in the NHL as a scoring defenseman. The combination of Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Mark Messier and other Oilers forwards proved difficult to opposing teams, especially with the help from Coffey in the offensive zone. Coffey's lightning speed combined with his strong shot helped him tally 96 points in the 1983-84 season. That season, the Oilers went on to win the first of several Stanley Cup championships. Coffey had tremendous ability as a playmaker, and he showed a high-level of focus and skill in all of his NHL appearances.
